A Holistic Sustainability Assessment Method for Urban Food System Governance Organic Eprints
Landert, Jan; Schader, Christian; Moschitz, Heidrun; Stolze, Matthias.
A growing number of people live in cities. Urban food systems and their impacts on ecosystems and socio-economic conditions are becoming increasingly important. To address the challenge of making urban food systems more sustainable, a rising number of assessments of urban food systems have been published. Some used large quantitative datasets while others were descriptive in nature and/or do not address the whole thematic spectrum of sustainability. In this study, an indicator set was developed, which uses widely available data to address all dimensions of sustainability. The indicators focus on policies and measures of public administration and local politics and are based on the guidelines for Sustainability Assessment of Food and Agriculture Systems...

A Policy Impact Model for Organic Farming in Switzerland Organic Eprints
Sanders, Juern; Lampkin, Nicolas; Midmore, Peter; Stolze, Matthias.
Although organic farming has expanded significantly in Europe in the last decade, a sectoral policy model is still missing that is able to analyse the impact of policy measures on organic farming. The use of programming models in the form of a sector-consistent farm group model seems to be a promising model approach, whereas applied general equilibrium models are regarded as less promising. An example is given for a policy impact model for organic farming. The bottom-up structure of this type of model makes it possible to analyse the impact of policy measures on farm incomes and volumes of production of organic and conventional farms at farm, regional and sectoral level.

Accounting for uncertainty in multi-criteria sustainability assessments at the farm level: Improving the robustness of the SMART-Farm Tool Organic Eprints
Schader, Christian; Curran, Michael; Heidenreich, Anja; Landert, Jan; Blockeel, Johan; Baumgart, Lukas; Ssebunya, Brian; Moakes, Simon; Marton, Silvia; Lazzarini, Gianna; Niggli, Urs; Stolze, Matthias.
Many farm sustainability assessments use multi-criteria methods for aggregating indicators based on performance scores and importance weights. One of these is the SMART-Farm Tool, which measures the degree of goal achievement of farms across 327 indicators nested within 4 sustainability dimensions, 21 themes and 58 sub-themes of the FAO-SAFA Guidelines (Sustainability Assessment of Food and Agriculture). This study aims to improve the empirical foundation of the SMART-Farm Tool by (i) evaluating the uncertainty of indicator weights obtained via expert opinion and (ii) integrating this uncertainty into SMART assessment results. An adapted Delphi process was implemented, involving a group of 67 experts from 21 countries divided into thematic and regional...

Aktionspläne für biologische Landwirtschaft – Planung, Durchführung und Evaluation Organic Eprints
Schmid, Otto; Stolze, Matthias; Lampkin, Nicolas; Dabbert, Stepan; Eichert, Christian; Michelsen, Johannes; Zanoli, Raffaele; Vairo, Daniela; Gonzalvez, Victor.
Within the EU funded project ORGAP a toolbox was developed for the evaluation of the European as well as national action plans fror Organics food and farming. Recommendations and a resource manual for policy makers and stakeholders were published, based on the analysis of national Organic Action Plans as well as stakeholder and expert consultation. The analysis showed that several EU member states have emphasised the need to balance supply-push policies with more market-focused demand-pull policies. An integrated approach is required through the formulation of multi-functional Organic Action Plans (OAPs), which also adress the dual roles of organic farming to provide public goods and satisfy consumer demand. Eight analysed Organic Action Plans...

Zander, Katrin; Hamm, Ulrich; Freyer, Bernhard; Gössinger, Katharina; Hametter, Monika; Naspetti, Simona; Padel, Susanne; Stolz, Hanna; Stolze, Matthias; Zanoli, Raffaele.

Zander, Katrin; Hamm, Ulrich; Stolz, Hanna; Stolze, Matthias.

Applicability of analysis techniques to determine consumer behaviour Organic Eprints
Stolz, Hanna; Hamm, Ulrich; Stolze, Matthias.
To explain consumers’ actual buying behaviour, a choice experiment and a standardised interview shall be combined in a twofold methodological approach. While the choice experiment provides information about consumers’ buying behaviour, the interview shall examine backgrounds and reasons for the choice decision by investigating the internal factors consisting of consumer attitudes, motivations and emotions, as well as the external factors, which are socio-demographic characteristics. The data provided by this twofold methodological approach need to be linked in the analysis procedure. Thus, the aim of this paper is to discuss the applicability of single multivariate analysis techniques and their ability to explain consumer behaviour. To identify causalities...

Organic Eprints
Stolz, Hanna; Blattert, Simon; Rebholz, Theresa; Stolze, Matthias.

Stolz, Hanna; Stolze, Matthias.
Food quality has become an important topic in the food market. Thus, suppliers have started offering conventional products including additional quality attributes, such as “free from GMO” or “free from additives”. We analysed the preferences and buying behaviour regarding such conventional “low-input” products in competition with conventional and organic product alternatives in consumer choice experiments in Germany and Switzerland. In the experiments, we tested milk, yogurt and apples. The choice experiments were combined with face-to-face interviews in order to collect information about the participating consumers, which might explain the buying behaviour observed in the choice experiment. We found that low-input products rather compete with...

Betriebswirtschaftliche Analyse von ökologisch wirtschaftenden Großbetrieben in Ostdeutschland Organic Eprints
Stolze, Matthias; Aschemann, Jessica.

Schader, Christian; Stolze, Matthias.
This paper aims to present the results of an expert and stakeholder based Delphi approach for analysing the performance of Swiss organic agriculture in terms of sustainability. We analysed four different production systems: Bio Suisse standards, public organic standards, integrated farming and farming according to Swiss cross compliance standards. The study illustrated that none of the farming systems performs 100% sustainable against any of the indicators. However, organic production showed an about 1-20% better performance than conventional and integrated systems. Particularly high scores were achieved for product quality, animal welfare, and biodiversity, while performing below average regarding resource use, food security and climate change. We...

Biodiversitätsbewertung in landwirtschaftlichen Ökobilanzen: Eine Herausforderung Organic Eprints
Gabel, V.; Meier, Matthias Samuel; Stolze, Matthias; Köpke, Ulrich.
Within the last years the demand and use of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for calculating and comparing the ecological impacts of agricultural products has increased. In addition there is growing awareness that biodiversity impacts should be included in comprehensive LCAs. This has led to research efforts with the goal to develop and implement methods for biodiversity impact assessment. Especially for organic agriculture such a development is important because thus the often in literature described biodiversity differences between conventional and organic farming could be pictured. In a review, twenty-two different biodiversity impact assessment methods have been analyzed. Their suitability for the evaluation of agricultural products was questioned....

CH-FARMIS 2.0: A Sector-Model to Assess the Economic and Environmental Impacts of Swiss Direct Payment Schemes Organic Eprints
Schader, Christian; Sanders, Jürn; Lampkin, Nic; Stolze, Matthias.
Quantitative sector models are an essential tool to forecast the sector-wide economic effects of agricultural policies. However, to cover ecological effects with economic sector models is still a methodological challenge. This poster describes a promising approach, which is currently implemented at the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL) to meet this challenge. CH-FARMIS is a sector consistent farm group model, which is able to forecast economic impacts of policies on farm, regional and sector-level. In a flexible way, CH-FARMIS is able to split up the farm sector in farm groups according to various characteristics (region, farming system, farm type, etc.). CH-FARMIS is based on positive mathematical programming (PMP) to allow for a realistic...

Co-existence in maize supply chains in Spain and Switzerland Organic Eprints
Oehen, Bernadette; Costa-Font, Montserrat; Morgner, Marion; Gil, José M.; Stolze, Matthias.
The debate about co-existence usually focuses on the situation of neighbouring farms. Organic producers take the position that co-existence affects the whole supply chain. Therefore, this paper compares the maize grain supply chains in Switzerland and Spain in order to identify which factors influence the segregation of genetically modified (GM) maize from non-GM maize, and discusses how organic production copes with the challenge of GM maize. Considerable differences exist between Spain and Switzerland with regard to grain maize as a component of animal feed. In Spain, where GM maize is grown, it is the feed industry that defines standards in the supply chains. Since the trading co-operatives are unable to supply GM-free maize, independent and separate...
